Sunday 29 August 2010

We tour round a couple of remote village pubs before doing mopping up operations at The Three Crowns.  Thanks to Canal Rob & Camra Dave for leading the singing the the Back Bar.  We had a great night.

Quarrymans Arms, Box
A difficult to find 300 year old miners pub that Roger & Gwyn knew well.  4 hand pulls produced Butcombe, Moles Best and 6X.  Small two bar establishment.  Food seemed reasonable with a Lasagne at £7-95.  Large selection of whiskies and a collection of beer mats on the ceiling beams.  No direct access to the beer garden which is a narrow terrace at the rear of the pub enjoying splendid views across to Bath.

Well worth a visit, and ramblers who have come out of the murky mine shafts are welcome, but as you would expect the tables are given over to food.

The Dumb Post Inn, Bramwell

This pub is well tucked away and sadly suffering from the recent death of the driving family member. 3 hand pulls offer Butcombe, 6X, & Bath Gem in fine condition.  Separate room for pool & darts.  The restaurant area to the rear no longer appears to be in use.  Additional seating in adjacent room with huge fire place.  The large toby jug collection still adorns the bar but other bits were recently sold at auction.

Saturday 28 August 2010 ~ Three Crowns (again!)

The Crew are down to 4, and with changes in the Beer line up, the challenge continues!

Saturday 24 July 2010

Sadly today we had to say goodbye to Poor Little Davy, I am going to miss him being constantly at my side!

On a happier note Kath won 1st Prize for her necklace at the Shaftesbury Bead Shop - Bijoux Beads.  Well done Kathie!

Friday 9 July 2010

Another nice day for chasing trains.  Here we see rebuilt Royal Scot class 46115 Scots Guardsman climbing Parkstone Bank valiantly, but hardly storming and with only 10 on and a Class 47 banking!

Saturday 3 July 2010 ~ 11th Devizes Beer Festival

Another sell-out festival on Devizes Wharf and it was really busy this year.  Due to circumstances beyond our control (Tarkie!) we arrived quite late (about 3pm) and it was really standing room only.  But luckily we did get some seats!  A Poor SADCAT turnout this year but for the die hards here is the group photo.

Saturday 26 June

Kath and I are out chasing trains again.  This time it's The Cornish Riviera Express (Paddington-Exeter) with 6024 King Edward I, then doubled headed with 5029 Nunney Castle as far as Par when Western Class diesel D1015 Western Champion was taking over the run to Penzance.  Not realising the Glastonbury Festival would affect us we set off to get the King at Castle Cary, and then the pair on Dawlish sea wall, where the King is clearly in charge!

Saturday 12 June Lacock III

The Bell.

We were impressed when Paul the Barman instantly recognised us and he'd been on the website too!  We think Paul should have an award for Top Barman - friendly, helpful, and takes an interest.  Qualities not usually found these days. We also met Landlord Alan who is also a nice bloke.  6 hand pulls gave 4 beers + 1 cider.  We tried Bath Gem 4.1% & Woodfordes Wherry,3.8%  both in good CAMRA 3½ condition.

This time we took all important beer soaking rolls and stopped for a picnic on our way to climb up to The Rising Sun.  Naturally our youngest member, Rhian, made it to the top first!

6 pumps - 4 beers, 3 Moles + guest - RCH East St Cream 5%

This is a lovely little pub, character stone building, great garden with quite a view.  Since last visit in April a lot of shrubbery has grown up in the near foreground which sadly spoils the view, but The Pub has no control over it.

To be honest, I don't think the full potential is being realised.  There is a distinctly "Managed" feel to the place and the beer quality could be better.  Beers not always as clear as they should be.  The RCH didn't taste brilliant (It's been Champion of The Maltings!) and The 'Landlady' put it down to how the beer is.  The Moles Elmos Fire was also not at its best.  Beer Score - CAMRA 2½.

We've been in twice now, and no interest has been shown in our group from behind the bar. Am I expecting too much, I ask?

The Red Lion

5 pumps give IPA, 6X, and Horizon. We all had the latter.  A good choice.  Once again we were made welcome and the courtyard garden was very pleasant.

The George

5 hand pulls in all providing 3 Waddys beers today and we all went for the seasonal St George & Dragon at 4.5% to finish the day.  Clearly (sic!) the beer was right at the end and the barmaid tried to fob us off with it.  Barrel changed but not enough beer pulled through and tried to palm that off on us as well.  The 'Sour Taste' was well and truly in the mouth so we decided not to stay as planned, but get off back to........... The 3 Crowns!!!!   Good decision.

Waiting for the early bus!

All in all, 3 Crowns aside, the best pub in Lacock has to be The Bell.

Rhian, did The Tour, wore The Shirt, and she's in the Group photos.  I think that makes her our latest Honorary Member!

Friday 11 June 2010

The night before our walk to Lacock and in time honoured fashion we spend it in The 3 Crowns

Friday 4 June 2010

Kath & I accompanied Zoe to visit Nick in Bristol Hospital recovering from expensive surgery to relieve pressure on the nerves in his neck.  Good to report he is on the mend and soon to come home, so on the way back we celebrated in a pub.  However, we went a bit off course and only found this place by chance.  But, we definitely need to go back!

The Bell, Buckland Dinham

What a gem of a find this was!  This freehouse is run by eccentric Landlord Jeremy Westcott and his wife Lucy.  I must find out more about the history next time, but it's a GradeII listed on the A362 between Frome - Radstock. 5 Hand pulls offer Addlestones Cider, Butcome and 2 guests which today were Hobgoblin, and Cottage RR Phantom 5%.  There was a Cider festival the next day hence a spare pump.  Every menu is put together differently and reads like a book and quite interesting.  Steak & Ale pie £9-95, Special Sausages & Mash £9-75 seems a tad expensive but I can tell you it was well worth it!  Wines from £11-50 which seemed better than you normally expect.  Waitresses were great - knew all the ins & outs of the menu & specials.  Landlord has a very dry sense of humour.  What more can you ask?  Camping & caravans out back, a walled beer garden and a 74oz Steak challenge... eat it all in 2hrs and its free - if not £50.  Nick?????

Not sure what the Pulpit is for we will have to ask next time.....

Friday 21 May 2010 ~ RATS at The Tan Hill Inn

Once again on our way up to Islay we stopped at the famous Tan Hill Inn to find Landlady Tracy in good form!  We met a couple in the bar and enjoyed beers and a meal with them before conversation was interrupted by a poetry recital.  Mick Tems & Olly hail from Pontypridd, so I asked if they knew our friend Dave Jones and The RATS.  Not only do they know him, they are RATS!  Mick did a write up of our meeting for the June RATS Newsletter and here is the photo.

Friday 15 May 2010 ~ Re-Opening of 3 Crowns, Chippenham!!!

After an enjoyable Braai at Rog & Gwyn's we strolled over to Town and decided to use up some CAMRA vouchers at the local Wetherspoon.  Amazingly, this was a pleasant experience. 6 hand pulls, 2 Triple fff beers and all in very good condition so we sat on the river veranda to enjoy them in the sun!

Three Crowns

We never expected this place to re-open, but not only that, it has improved!  Hand pulls increased to 6 in main bar and tonight there are 4 beers on.  I stuck with 3.8% Burton Bridge Golden Delicious.  There are 3 more pumps in the little lounge and Ciders are planned. PLUS, Telly, Fruit Machine and Juke Box have been removed! Beer soaking rolls always available at £1 each!

Wednesday 5 May 2010

Robbie visits, Plough, Saxon, Bakers, & Cricketers and we present him with his SADCATS badge in The Tarky Arms!

Saturday 24 April 2010 ~ 18th Maltings Beer Festival, Newton abbot

This year there were 3 main contingents:  The SADCATS,  The Burntwood Jollyboys,  and Les & Jim’s Lot, plus those who made their own way there – Neil, Terry, Keith.  The Bournemouth (East Dorset) CAMRA guys (Robin & Lightweight) managed to escape the photo, and one of our regulars and also a SADCAT missed the bus!  What happened to Mike?  Other regulars also missing in action: A few SADCATS, plus Roger & Dee, Little Steve, Chris Bunker, and several of our partners……

This was the 18th Maltings.  I missed the very first one in 1993 because I didn’t know about it, but since then I have only missed the 1997 session so I hope to see all my old friends once again in 2011 for an even bigger group photo. This year there were 30 of us (including one partially visible head far left) and no interlopers!  Biggest group photo to date, so thanks to everyone who made the effort to attend.  The Maltings Years  will be updated in due course [see Club History].

Friday night pre Maltings Braai

Gwyn brought a large Sea Bream which boned easily and went down very well.

Saturday 17 April 2010 ~ Lacock II

We were due to be at Chippenham Beer Festival today but it was postponed a week due to the tributes for the 40th anniversary of Eddie Cochrane's death in a car crash on the A4 in Chippenham at this time in 1960.  We were going to do a crawl of Bath by train but the weather was so good we walked from Roger & Gwyneth's across the fields to Lacock - about 4 miles.  Gwyn's daughter Angie joined us for a great day out, wearing the T-shirt, being in the group photos, and earning her badge of honorary membership!  Maybe we will see her again at another Wadworthshire event!!

George Inn

A proper old pub since 1361.  Great atmosphere, good pint of Waddys, shame food is pricey.

5 hand pulls in all providing 3 Waddys beers today and we all liked the seasonal St George & Dragon 4.5% (Ex Manns?).  With hindsight this was probably a little heavy for starters!!!

The Bell

NW Wilts CAMRA pub of the year for the last 5 years where the beers scored low on our last visit, but back on form today.  6 hand pulls including a traditional cider. We especially liked  Cotswold Spring, Codrington Best 4.4% Barman Paul is a friendly helpful guy, Thanks Paul.

The Rising Sun

It's a shame we didn't make it up the hill to this pub last time.  A Mole's tie with 6 hand pulls and full range of Moles beers which were in good condition.  There was also a guest due to a recent beer festival.  Lovely old pub with flagstone floor a superb garden and amazing views!  Why didn't we find this place sooner??? It was difficult to drag ourselves away from here and we probably stayed for 1 too many!!! This is an entry for PTVBYD

As we came back down the hill we thought it would be rude not to call back in The Bell and thank Paul the Barman for his directions to the Rising Sun.  If not for him we would never have attempted the climb!   So we had another beer!

The Carpenters Arms
Building pre-dates Lacock’s oldest pub by 61yrs (1300) but didn’t become a pub until 1610 as The White Hart. In 1724 it added a short lived brewery and changed to present name. 3 hand pulls offer 6X, plus 2 Courage beers all in excellent condition. Good pub menu & well priced. Has a skittle alley. The porcelain in the ladies toilet is over 50yrs old, ornately antiquarian and needs to be preserved! Landlord was friendly and informative. Doesn’t quite have the atmosphere of The George but still a good watering hole!
Reviewed 03/01/09 by SADCATS on Tour! SCORE- 7.

The above is my BiTe review from last visit.  The Landlord seemed to have fallen foul of the local CAMRA branch and I promised to give him a fair write up on BiTe.  It took me 6 months of repeated e-mails to even get the pub listed and following today's visit, I wished I hadn't bothered.  When we arrived I expected to have a conversation on the above, but the opening gambit was 'Are you eating with us?'.  I attempted to conduct a conversation with the landlord several times, and each time he rudely walked off while I was speaking.  He clearly would not talk to me.  I had to ask how long he had been there to check if this was the same guy!  Beer range had changed and the hand pumps moved to altered back bar, all of which seemed to improve the place, but I wouldn't recommend bothering to go there!

The Red Lion

A shot from earlier in the day and we returned for our last beer of the trip.  Large pub atmosphere and the stock set of Waddys beers, but it's always friendly.  Has a great rear garden too.  Arranged our cab home from here and gave a lift to a lady who had become stranded with her elderly dog!  Sadly, once again I've had too much by now and don't remember much else of the evening!

Friday 16 April 2010

While the girls entertained themselves at The Rowden Arms, Roger, Tarkie & I did a quick crawl round Chippenham.
+ Plus Points:-  The Bear has a new landlord, changing beer policy and he can't quite keep up with demand. Caladonian Flying Dutchman 4.5% in good CAMRA 4 condition.  New Inn was friendly but basic.  We also heard The Three Crowns is re-opening soon!!!!!
- Minuses:-  Four Seasons was decidedly unwelcoming, Beer in the Old Road Tavern was as bad as ever!

Wednesday 14 April 2010

Another Steam train to photograph.  This time Merchant Navy 35028 Clan Line is on The VSOE Luncheon Special from Victoria to Bristol and we managed to get on the Kennet & Avon Canal Dundas Aqueduct near Bath, only to have the shot eclipsed by a passing freight - amazing what Photoshop can do!  And even more amazing was that the finished article was published by The Railway Herald (Issue 219 p10) captioned as 'A Rare Shot'!

Saturday 10 April 2010

Felling a bit Tarque!

The legendary non-whisky drinker is tempted by one of Pad's collection:-

Chivas Bros, Strathisla, 12 year old.

Shame it's a Speyside, but Tarkie declared a liking for it!

Saturday 3 April 2010 ~ Bournemouth Beer Festival (Purbeck Hall BIC)

Originally billed as The 1st Bournemouth Beer Festival which obviously irked others than myself, and subsequently changed to 'Inaugural Big B'mth Beer Festival'.  Pad & I worked the bar at the very 1st one organized by our outlawed CB radio club friends (Roscoe & The General) at The Town Hall around 1982.  Still looking for the photos!

Robin and his crew at East Dorset CAMRA have worked hard since 1999 putting on The Poole Beer Festivals at St Aldhelms Hall in Branksome each October.  A popular event which has outgrown the venue and sells out very quickly.  I asked Robin why they didn't move to somewhere like Poole Arts Centre and the problem has always been the greed of the venue owners.  Typically the BIC would have charged CAMRA approx £5,000 if they had staged this event.   Apparently the BIC (Bournemouth International Centre) had nothing on the calendar for Easter Weekend in the Purbeck Hall and someone thought of doing a beer festival.  GREAT!  Fortunately they enlisted East Dorset CAMRA to order the beer, set up the bar, and 85% staff it.

I have to applaud The BIC for taking this step.  It is a good venue for a festival.  Large enough to dwarf the back to back rack of 150 casks sat in the middle of the hall.  More tables and seating than customers!  And the interior wood finish walls and ceiling give the place a pleasant atmosphere.  But a few down sides which we graciously put down to inexperience in this field.  There is no excuse for a top rated venue like this keeping us queued up outside in the rain.  No hiding behind Insurance, Licence etc, thank you.  You are a BIG company, and big building, the front part of which was closed off!  Get us out of the rain!  We really will wait until opening time to buy beers.  Beer was a bit pricey for a festival - £1-50 per half.  But did we really need theatre style progressively numbered tickets for beer vouchers!  The 2 girls at the kiosk selling these were completely overwhelmed trying to sell them!    Every session had live bands, unlike the CAMRA norm for a 'quiet' saturday lunch session.  OK don't mind this, and to be honest, the place really is so big and the sound was well balanced that we hardly noticed.  Trouble was, as soon as the band started someone turned all the hall lights down in true concert fashion.  There were more people over 50 in the hall than not and we all had the same problem - not enough light to read the programme!!  Eventually I found someone to own the problem, but by then I was getting fractious!  I ended a similar explanation to the above with "....it's a Beer Festival, NOT a rock concert, and we can't f***ing see anything!" At which the rather young guy said he would have to have me ejected if I spoke to him like that!  What do you expect!!!!!!!!  Anyway, he did turn the lights back on, and I went back to thank him on behalf of my friends who could now see their beer lists!  Actually, the programme was very professionally done with a colour pump clip badge for each beer entry and full tasting notes which our girls found useful.  Shame about the food - over priced roast pork bap £4-95 for bugger all, so we didn't have any.

Waiting in the rain                                          9 SADCATS                                          'One Eyed Jack' in The Goat

9 SADCATS attending today: Andy & Liz, Tony & Teresa, Roger & Gwyneth, Kath & I, and Pad.

For those of you who know me, my over active thyroid problem has seen me lose about 2½ stone in the last 3 months.  A situation which obviously affects my drinking ability, and one which I have not considered seriously enough.  This culminated today, possibly due to the lack of food too, in 11 half pints seeing me as pissed as a parrot and not remembering leaving the event, let alone going to The Goat & Tricycle afterwards!   I fell asleep in the pub and later woke up with a start saying :”Where the F**K are we?”   I don't remember the Chinese take away, or where I went for half the night on a visit to the toilet.  I apologise to my wife and friends for being such an arse, and thanks again to Andy & Liz for arranging the day and being gracious hosts.  If I haven't been barred, and BIC provided, I will look forward to doing this again!

Sunday 21 March 2010 ~ 1st BRAAI

Thanks to Nick & Zoe for organising the 1st Braai of the year.  3 weeks later than last year (Tarkie's Birthday 28 Feb!) but it has been a cold winter.

A good turnout - 9 of us. Zoe ferrying food from Kitchen, and me taking photo!

Tuesday 16 March 2010

A short trip out to:-

1.  The Crown, Ibberton - 16th century village pub in the heart of Dorset which retains some original features.  3 hand pulls were all Palmers (Copper, Best & Gold) but only Copper on, and this was past its best. Seems the Landlord/lady prefer to be in the kitchen and leave the important 'Front of House' role to a young girl whose conversation skills were non-existent.  Says it all really.

2. Royal Oak, Okeford Fitzpaine - A totally different story here.  We were welcomed in the small main bar with darts and fire by the locals, the Landlord who was playing darts, and the efficient young man behind the bar.  This ex-Badger pub has had a good makeover in recent times with the addition of a small bar and bistro at the rear leading into the old lounge with warm ambient lighting.  Feee Wi-Fi, Pool room at back, and skittle alley upstairs!  Beer Festival last weekend July.  Has 2 house beers - 6X and Ringwood Best, plus a guest which today was Caledonian Deuchers IPA in great condition.  The food seems to be very well priced: Bangers & Mash £6-95, All Day Breakfast £5-95.  Open all day Sat & Sun, so another worthy of the SADCATS Sunday Afternoon rota

Sunday 14 March 2010

A busy day with more 'Auditions' for Dreadful.  Thanks Martin, but you're obviously too good for this gig!

After a short rendition on his favourite 'Les Paul' he tried my new Epiphone Casino and you can see which he enjoyed most!
[Quote]  "Most comfortable guitar I've ever played!"  Martin Skipper (formerly of Maestro)

We retired to The Cricketers (today's designated pub).  Butcombe & Tribute were fantastic again, but I was the only SADCAT there.  Later toured round The Saxon and The Baker without finding any more drinking companions.  Oh well, that's Mothers Day for you!

Saturday 6 March ~ The Watercress Line

9F 92212                                  A4 60019 Bittern                               A1 60163 Tornado and Kath taking video!

Thursday 4 March 2010 ~ Bob & Tarkie's Joint Birthday Nosh at The Horseshoe, Ebbesbourne Wake

Just the 8 of us, couldn't manage a full group photo. Bowman Swift One 3.8%, 6d Handley Gold 4.2% were excellent. Sorry I had the last T-Bone!

Wednesday 3rd March 2010 ~ Bob's Birthday

The Fiddleford Inn
3 hand pulls, 2 beers on including Butcombe which was in good nick (CAMRA 3½)
Bar food looked good (Bangers+Mash £7) and everyone leaving made a point of saying so!!
Open all day everyday, so worth putting on the SADCATS Sunday Afternoon rota.

You wouldn't know this place had been closed for 15 months.

Sunday 28 February ~ Tarkie's Birthday @ The Cricketers, and Wildernis

  'Lumping On'

Saturday 27 February ~ Birthday Crawl of Corsham

White Horse, Biddestone                               Biddestone Arms,                                                      and interior.

2 real ale pubs in a quintessential English village, but for original and friendly atmosphere the White Horse wins. 4 hand pulls with good range of beers, nice welcoming fire.  Food just a tad expensive (Chicken+Ham pie £9-50).  The Landlord and every local in the bar spoke to us and made us feel at home.  Thank you!

And thanks to Roger & Gwyneth for another great crawl !!!!!!!!!!!!!  Shame Tarkie couldn't make it!

Cross Keys, Pickwick
Great little pub. A 17th century ex-Ushers pub in traditional Cotswold stone.  This is a Free House but the 3 hand pulls currently are all Moles. Bar, separate room to rear, Dartboard, and lovely walled beer garden.  Loads of pies at £7-95.  Friendly welcoming Landlord , staff & locals.  Sadly we were in the final session as this pub is due to close down tonight!  Glad we made it!  Heading into the main town we find the next pub doesn't open until 5.30 so we resort to a pint in The Royal Oak which is a Waddies tie with not much going for it.  Rather than have another here we decide a walk is a better way to pass the time, which was when we found......

The Great Western
Another ex-Ushers house with 3 hand pulls giving Youngs Best, Sharps Doombar (Guest), and 6X!
Open all day Fri/Sat/Sun with great bar snax - Chilli £5.  Two bars and a linked back room where the Rugby was on large screen.  Pleasant, friendly, good prices, good boozer.

We also passed The Metheuen Arms which sadly, had closed down.

The Flemish Weaver
Built in 1625 this Freehouse has 4 hand pulls with 2 regular real ales, a guest and a draught cider.  More like a restaurant, the prices are surprising - Bangers & Mash £6-95, and there is a Loyalty scheme.  Walled beer garden at rear, and table games are available.  A great little pub, sadly changing hands in 3 weeks.

Next stop was The Hare & Hounds.  Sadly I didn't think this was worth writing about.  Beers OK, but it's had a naff makeover.  Next door however..........

The Two Pigs - (The pub, not me and Rog!)

Great place with 2 regular beers and a guest.  Long list of recent guests. One of the regular beers is Summer Lightning and as this is the 8th pub on the crawl I can't say much more except the barmaid wrote up my Beer Book for me!  Another visit is definitely needed

Wednesday 24 February 2010 ~ New Honorary SADCAT

A trip to Swanage had to take in the legendary Square & Compass!

A busy day today, with new guitarists auditioning for  Dreadful  and a visit to The Saxon for David who earned his Honorary Members Badge.

Sunday 21 February 2010 ~ East Lancs Railway

We venture out in the snow for the steam gala at the East Lancs Railway, Bury.

  1. 30777 Sir Lamiel

  2. 70013 Oliver Cromwell

  3. Black 5, No. 44871

  4. 71000 Duke of Gloucester

Saturday 20 February 2010 ~ Liverpool Beer Festival

Jason, Robbie, David & I only have 4 people in front of us!

No problem with seats here, but we'll get the nearest to the bar today!

Almost 1st in the sub-level hall.  250 beers racked up.

The Ship & Mitre always puts on a supporting festival so it would have been churlish not to pop in for a swift one!

Friday 19 February 2010 ~ Liverpool Beer Festival

After a visit to the guitar shop where I nearly bought an Epiphone Casino we arrived at The Crypt in time for a good place in the queue.  This was Margaret's 1st Beer Festival and she was quite adventurous in her beer choices.  Tried all the girlie fruit beers from Coach House, but voted Cains Mild 3.3% the best!!

Great pasties for £2, but we just had to do the China Town Buffet for £6.

The girls enjoyed the day out enough that I can't help thinking this may have started a trend ~ henceforth Friday will be 'Ladies Day' !

Monday 15 February 2010

Tarkie and I thought we would have a crafty lunchtime pint in The Horseshoe, Ebbesbourne Wake, only to find it's closed on Mondays.  As we wound our way home we found The Cown at Alvediston was open so we popped in for a pint!  We were made very welcome by Dave & Linda Stone, new licencees of 3 months.  This thatched, low beam building dates back to the 15th century but was 1st recorded as a pub in 1867, and the name has remained.  Set back from the street with large car park and even larger beer garden/terrace at the rear.  Bar plus seating and 2 separate eating areas.  3 hand pulls provided beers in excellent (CAMRA 4) condition: Ringwood Best, plus 2 guests: Keystone Bedrock 3.6%, Sixpenny Special FX 4.8%.  Dave plans to introduce a 4th pump soon, and Beer Festival from May time.  This couple previously ran The Gribble Inn, Nr Chichester for Hall & Woodhouse.  A micro brewing pub which gave H&W their 'Fursty Ferret' and plenty of beers to let Dave run beer festivals!  This man clearly knows how to run his pub and we look forward to sharing that experience!

Sunday 14 February 2010 ~ Valentine's Day

Thought we'd spend this doing a bit of romantic train-spotting!  This time we went to Salisbury for the arrival of 'Tornado' which entered traffic in Feb 2009 after a 15 year building programme costing £3m.  The 1st steam engine to be built since Evening Star (the last loco built for BR) in 1960.

60163 Tornado drifts in effortlessly, 17 min early!                     CAM-Kathleen 'The Line-side Video Camera-woman' waits for steam departure!

'Tornado' making easy work of her departure with 14 full coaches on board - that's 4½ times the length of today's normal trains! A sight not seen at Salisbury since the halcyon days of The Atlantic Coast Express.

Saturday 13 February 2010

We set off to photograph another train.  This time it's A4 class 60019 Bittern deputising for 34067 on The Valentine Express running from London Paddington to Bristol via the line along the Kennet & Avon Canal.  We went to Little Bedwyn for that classic Ivo Peters 1976 Ian Allen Combined Volume cover shot.  When we passed this way on The Voyage of The Mak'Tar (see Journal 6) I was concerned about uncontrolled growth of vegetation and sure enough the shot is ruined by a hedge line.  A dead one at that.  Why didn't I ask Nick to come with me, and bring a chain saw!

Note how the hedge completely screens the near 'Down' line.

So we head back west of Crofton Pumping Station between Locks 58 & 59 and get good shots as she rounds the curve!
And Kath takes a superb video and I must find out how to load it here!

Saturday 6 Feb 2010 - Dorchester Beer Festival

Back at the Corn Exchange in it's 22nd Year with a good selection of 80+ beers.  If you are looking for 'new' beers, as many 'Tickers' are, then I have it on good authority that this is one of the best of the smaller regional festivals.  An ever popular event, where tickets have to be limited for Fire Regulations and to maximise attendees there was almost no seating with tables in the main hall this year.  The room at the front of The Corn Exchange with tables & chairs is just a tad too far from the beer and really has no atmosphere.   Anyway, at least it didn't snow this year and Roger came down from Chippenham to join us.  We all met in The Gorge Caff for a stomach lining Fry-Up and joined the queue about 10.30 which wasn't soon enough to secure a decent table.  NB.

7 mins after opening and we have some 'not best' seats, our 1st beer and are joined by 'Lightweight'.  Anyone seen Teresa?

One of the Camra guys was taking pictures from the stage and did the honours for us after we found Teresa, so thanks Simon for the next 3 photos!

Mersea Island 4.8 Skipper
Warwickshire 4.9 Churchyard Bob

After a few hours shopping Kath & Wendy drag us back to The Baker Arms, Child Okeford, for a few more beers!

This good little pub is on the up.  A former Badger pub, thankfully now a free house with 3 hand pulls and 2 house beers: 6X, Sharps Doom Bar (CAMRA 4).
Sensibly priced snack food available and on Thursday nights the mobile chip van parks where my Rover stands and you can have them sent into the pub!
Pool table, Darts, and Sky TV are a feature, but don't particularly dominate the friendly atmosphere created by Jinx and his wife Caroline.

The 1st outing for the new 2010 blue shirts at The Cricketers which opens all day on Sundays.
Cosy atmosphere and 3 beers on which were all in very good condition (CAMRA 4½), Butcombe, Tribute & Otter.

Stopped for a pint at The George Inn, Longbridge Deverill on the way back.  3 hand pulls offered 6x, plus Wessex Devils Advocate 4.5%.  We tried tthe latter as it is only brewed just up the lane and it was in good (CAMRA 4) condition.  Nice log fire, but basically eating, plus a separate restaurant at each end of bar.  Rib Eye steak £14-95, no bargain pub snacks.  Stands in 2 acres next to river wyle.  Accomodation from £65 per room, per night.  Not sure the free Wi-Fi in the bar is a good idea - some scally having a web conference and we thought was talking to us!  OK for a decent pint but no atmosphere.  Clearly a 'Managed' house and the two girls on duty offered no conversation.  Shame.

Sunday 10 January 2010

A good turn out at The Saxon today.  Tony A put forward a proposal to have our meetings in a different local pub each Sunday.  As we have 4 and they are all open Sunday afternoons a rota was suggested, seconded and carried the vote.  All I have to do now is post the rota, unless there are any other suggestions, next week it's The Bakers - Child Okeford, then Cricketers - Shroton.  The Plough at Manston has suspended all day Sunday opening until Easter.

I now have ONE spare ticket for Dorchester - Anyone want to come?
The 7 attending are:  Bob, Tony A, Tarky, Teresa, Nick, Pad, Lightweight.  Kath, Zoe, & Wendy are all going shopping round Dorchester!

Friday 8 January 2010

It won't be long now!  Tony & I had our 1st guitar lesson tonight and celebrated with a few beers at The Plough!

Thursday 7 January 2010

During a visit to Dorchester Hospital I visited The Blue Raddle and found that tickets for the Beer Festival (Sat 6 Feb) were almost sold out.  They are sold out now - because I also visited Tom Brown's and bought the last 8 tickets for the Sat lunchtime session.  Call me if you would like to join me - 1st come basis.

NYD Friday 1 January 2010

  The Bennet Arms, Semley, Wilts

The 1st pub review of the year was undertaken by Kath & I together with Clive & Catherine.  We were looking for a pub we hadn't tried before on Clive's route home to Trowbridge.  The Bennet Arms at Semley seemed to fit the bill, so we rang and booked a table for 7pm.  This is a strangely laid out pub where the rooms either side of the front door are for eating, the left hand being a restaurant.  The bar is quite small, down a few steps to the rear with a sofa, two tables and a cosy log fire.  Despite booking the only large table in the bar, we arrived to find it taken by a couple of students and we were shown to the upper eating area at the right of the front door.  Not really what we wanted, but before we finished our meal the bar had been 'taken over' by the local student population, so this turned out to be a better choice.  The pub dates from 1560 when it was built by local landowners who gave the pub it's name.  An old photo in the bar shows there was a time when the pub was tied to the Gibbs Mew Brewery of Salisbury.  Now a free house there are three hand pulls: Ringwood Best, plus 2 guests - Yeovil Ruby, Keystone Large One.  There was also a seasonal Rosy Nosey in a barrel at the back.  Beer quality was poor, except for the Ringwood.  Food was actually quite basic but the pricing is a bit hit & miss.  My Gammon was £8-95 so reasonable value, but it only came with chips and an egg, no beans!  Cathy had to send her blue steak back to be warmed through!  The new barman was quite entertaining - came to ask what sweets we wanted while we were still waiting for our mains!  Odd pub, shame about all the students.  Would we eat here again - probably not.

Happy New Year to all SADCATS and readers!

The lucky members of Leeds University Cross Country Club booked their New Year Eve party at The Tan Hill Inn, Keld, N.Yorks and woke up on New Years Day to 7ft snow drifts.  It took 3 days for the rescue team to arrive ~ The Perfect Lock-In!   This pub is nothing short of Fantastic!  No.47 in our Pub Directory and one of the few PTVBYD.  Guess where I'm going on 31 December this year?
